Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before your flight. Can't find your answer? Just get in touch.

Before you fly

Do I need any experience?

None at all. Everything is explained on the ground before you fly, and a qualified pilot or instructor is with you for the whole flight.

Is there a minimum age?

Trial lessons and flying training have a minimum starting age of 14. Under-18s will need a parent or guardian to sign a consent form. For experience flights, please get in touch to discuss age requirements before booking.

Do I need a membership?

You need a Portal Aviation membership for PPL training, starter packs and self hire. Membership options and prices are on our membership page.

Are there height or weight limits?

Yes. In the Cessna 152 the maximum weight is 90 kg, and we suggest a height of no more than 6'2" as taller flyers can find the cockpit awkward. The Cessna 172 has more room and its limits are less strict, but they still depend on everyone on board, so we take each person's weight when you book. If you are unsure, tell us your height and weight and we will help you choose the right aircraft.

Can friends or family come along?

In the Cessna 172 you can bring one passenger, who sits in the back: a maximum of 3 on board including your pilot or instructor (subject to weight limits). The two-seat Cessna 152 has room for just you and your instructor. Spectators are always welcome to watch from the airfield.

Can I fly at night?

Yes. From October to the end of February the experience flight is also available at night, so you can see Kent lit up below you. Night flights are £210 in the Cessna 152 or £255 in the Cessna 172. Ask for a night flight when you book.

On the day

What happens if the weather is bad?

Safety always comes first. If the weather is not suitable we will contact you to rearrange at no cost. We usually make the call on the morning of your flight.

What should I wear and bring?

Comfortable clothes, flat shoes and sunglasses on a bright day. Bring photo ID and your voucher code if you have one.

Can I take photos and videos?

Absolutely. Your passengers can take as many photos as they like, and we will advise you on the best moments to grab a picture safely.

How long should I allow?

Please allow around an hour on top of your flight time for the welcome, briefing and debrief.

Vouchers

How do I book a flight with my voucher?

Call or email us with your voucher code and some dates that suit you, and we will find a slot.

How long are vouchers valid?

Vouchers are valid for 6 months from the date of purchase. See our voucher terms and conditions for full details.

Can I upgrade my voucher?

Yes. You can upgrade to a longer flight or a different aircraft by paying the difference when you book.
